    Background:

    • Patient education is a critical component of nursing care.
    • Nurses are recognized as key providers of patient education.
    • Assessing the perceived responsibility and actual achievement in nursing patient education is vital.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate perceptions of nurses' responsibility for patient education.
    • To assess the level of achievement in patient education delivered by nurses.
    • To identify areas for improvement in nursing patient education practices.

    Main Methods:

    • A stratified random sample of 1,230 nurses (staff nurses, administrators, educators) was surveyed.
    • Perceptions of responsibility and achievement in patient education were measured using a 5-point scale.
    • Statistical analysis was performed to compare ratings between nurse groups.

    Main Results:

    • All groups rated nurses' responsibility for patient education highly (above 4/5).
    • Staff nurses reported statistically significantly lower ratings for nurses' responsibility (p = .0005).
    • Patient education achievement was rated below 'good' (below 3/5) by all surveyed groups.

    Conclusions:

    • The role of the nurse as a patient educator requires significant strengthening.
    • Improving the satisfactory achievement of patient education is essential for advancing the nursing role.
    • Bridging the gap between perceived responsibility and actual patient education outcomes is a priority.
