Background:

  • Severe knee joint deformity and instability often necessitate complex reconstructive procedures.
  • Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) aims to restore function and alleviate pain in patients with debilitating knee conditions.

Observation:

  • This study evaluated 17 patients with severe knee deformities undergoing TKA with a rotating hinge knee prosthesis.
  • Preoperative assessments included pain levels, disease duration, underlying diagnoses (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic arthritis), and functional scores (HSS).

Findings:

  • The rotating hinge knee prosthesis demonstrated significant improvements in HSS scores and range of motion postoperatively.
  • No major complications such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or nerve palsy were observed, with one case of superficial infection managed successfully.

Implications:

  • The rotating hinge knee prosthesis appears to be a safe and effective option for managing severe knee joint deformities in the short term.
  • Long-term follow-up is crucial to fully ascertain the durability and sustained efficacy of this prosthesis.
