Background:

  • Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) is characterized by air in the mediastinum without a clear cause.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and discuss clinical experience with spontaneous pneumomediastinum.
  • To understand the presentation, diagnosis, and management of SPM.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective descriptive study of 41 patients diagnosed with SPM between 1990 and 2006.
  • Data collected on patient demographics, symptoms, signs, diagnostic methods, and treatment outcomes.

  • The mean age was 21 years; 83% were male. Asthma history was noted in 22%.
  • Chest pain (85%) and dyspnea (49%) were common. Subcutaneous emphysema occurred in 71%.
