Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess anal function in professional male mountain bikers.
  • To investigate the link between prolonged cycling saddle exposure and defecation disorders.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 19 professional male mountain bikers and a control group of healthy volunteers.
  • Utilized rectal examination, anorectal manometry, assessment of rectal sensation, rectal compliance, and the anorectal inhibitory reflex.
  • Collected data via questionnaires on anal pain, bleeding, hemorrhoids, fissures, abscesses, and defecation problems.

Main Results:

  • Professional mountain bikers exhibited significantly higher sphincter resting pressures (89 mmHg vs 69 mmHg) and squeeze pressures (137 mmHg vs 96 mmHg) compared to the control group.
  • Sphincter volumes were also significantly elevated in professional bikers (resting: 513 cc vs 273 cc; squeeze: 1389 cc vs 490 cc).
  • Rectal sensation thresholds did not show significant differences between the groups.

Conclusions:

  • Proctological problems are prevalent in professional mountain bikers.
  • Chronic microtrauma from saddle vibration may cause inflammation and anal fissures, leading to increased sphincter pressure and potential defecation disorders.
  • Muscle hypertrophy resulting from chronic irritation could contribute to defecation difficulties.
