Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) risk factors were compared in infants experiencing apparent life-threatening events (ALTE). Prone sleeping and maternal smoking were more common in ALTE infants who died of SIDS, suggesting distinct risk profiles.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare known risk factors for SIDS in infants with ALTE against matched controls.
  • To analyze differences between ALTE infants who died of SIDS and those who survived.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized questionnaire data from 58 infants with ALTE and 56 matched controls.
  • Included 244 SIDS cases and 868 SIDS control infants for comparison.
  • Analyzed risk factors including sleeping position and maternal smoking habits.

  • The incidence of ALTE was significantly higher in infants who later died of SIDS (7.4%) compared to SIDS controls (1.9%).
