Insights
This study developed and validated the Parent Experiences of Paediatric Care (PEPC) questionnaire. The PEPC effectively measures parent experiences in paediatric inpatient settings, showing good reliability and validity.
Area of Science:
- Healthcare quality assessment
- Pediatric patient experience research
- Survey instrument development
Background:
- Measuring parent experiences in pediatric inpatient care is crucial for quality improvement.
- Existing tools may not comprehensively capture parental perspectives.
- A validated instrument is needed to assess key aspects of care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate the Parent Experiences of Paediatric Care (PEPC) questionnaire.
- To create a reliable and valid tool for measuring parent satisfaction with pediatric inpatient services.
- To identify specific domains of care important to parents.
Main Methods:
- A multi-stage approach including literature review, parent interviews, and pre-testing.
- A national survey of 6144 parents of children admitted to Norwegian pediatric departments in 2005.
- Factor analysis was used to determine the questionnaire's structure.
Main Results:
- A response rate of 53.8% (3308 parents) was achieved, indicating PEPC acceptability.
- Factor analysis supported a six-scale structure: nursing, doctor services, organization, information (examinations/tests, discharge), and facilities.
- The PEPC demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.7-0.9) and test-retest reliability, with validity supported by correlations with overall satisfaction and pain control.
Conclusions:
- The PEPC questionnaire captures essential aspects of pediatric inpatient care from the parent's viewpoint.
- The instrument exhibits strong evidence of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and validity.
- The PEPC is recommended for use in surveys assessing parent experiences in pediatric inpatient care.
Aim:
To describe the development and evaluation of a parent completed questionnaire to measure parent experiences of inpatient paediatric care, the parent experiences of paediatric care (PEPC).
Methods:
Literature review, parent interviews, pre-testing and a national survey of 6144 parents of children who were inpatients at one of the 20 paediatric departments within Norway in 2005.
Results:
Three thousand three hundred and eight (53.8%) parents responded to the questionnaire. Low levels of missing data suggest that the PEPC is acceptable. The questionnaire includes six scales as supported by the results of factor analysis: nursing services (seven items), doctor services (five items), organisation (four items), information--examinations and tests (two items), information--discharge (three items) and hospital facilities (four items). Cronbach's alpha and test-retest correlations ranged from 0.7 to 0.9. Comparisons of scale scores with several variables including overall satisfaction with care and pain control, supported validity.
Conclusion:
The PEPC questionnaire includes important aspects of hospital care from the perspective of the parent. It has good evidence for internal consistency, test-retest reliability and validity and is recommended in surveys of parent experiences of paediatric inpatient care.
