Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the midbrain modulated blood pressure in a hypertensive patient. This novel approach offers potential for treating hypertension through electrical stimulation of the brain.
Area of Science:
- Neuromodulation
- Pain Management
- Cardiovascular Physiology
Background:
- Chronic neuropathic pain, particularly in the oral cavity, significantly impacts quality of life.
- Hypertension is a prevalent condition requiring effective management strategies.
- Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established therapy for certain neurological disorders.
Observation:
- A 61-year-old male patient with hypertension and chronic oral neuropathic pain received DBS.
- The target area for stimulation was the periventricular/periaqueductal gray matter.
- Intraoperative stimulation demonstrated the ability to influence blood pressure levels.
Findings:
- Electrical stimulation within the midbrain periventricular/periaqueductal gray area modulated the patient's blood pressure.
- Blood pressure could be increased or decreased based on precise electrode placement.
- This represents the first reported instance of hypertension management via midbrain electrical stimulation.
Implications:
- Midbrain DBS may offer a novel therapeutic avenue for managing hypertension.
- Further research is warranted to explore the efficacy and safety of this neuromodulation technique for cardiovascular control.
- This study opens new possibilities for utilizing brain stimulation in treating systemic conditions beyond pain.
