Background:

Mammography is a key tool for breast cancer screening.
Late diagnosis of breast cancer remains a significant challenge in many regions.
Understanding patient demographics and screening patterns is vital for improving outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze demographic and clinical characteristics of women undergoing mammography.
To identify factors influencing mammography utilization and assessment categories.
To explore risk factors and financial status among patients.

Main Methods:

A descriptive review of mammography records was conducted.
Data was collected from a tertiary care cancer hospital in Lahore, Pakistan.

The study included consecutive records of women undergoing mammography in January and February 2005.

Main Results:

Only 12 out of 87 patients were undergoing mammography for screening; most presented with palpable disease.
The median age was 47 years, with a mode of 40 years.
Financial affordability was a barrier, with only 50 patients able to afford all imaging expenses; 16 had a family history, and 28 reported Hormone Replacement Therapy use.

Conclusions:

Late presentation for mammography is common, often with palpable breast cancer.
Economic factors and low public awareness contribute to delayed screening.
There is a need for improved breast cancer awareness and accessible screening programs.
