Ankle Joint

The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. Summary

Athletes with acute lateral ankle sprains experience significant balance deficits, particularly when eyes are closed. These balance problems stem from impaired proprioception, affecting reflexive responses more than voluntary control.

  • Acute lateral ankle sprains commonly disrupt an athlete's balance and proprioception.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of acute lateral ankle sprains on balance in male athletes.
  • To differentiate between conscious and unconscious proprioceptive deficits post-injury.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Biodex Balance System to measure sway index and limits of stability.
  • Assessed functional balance using the Functional Reach Test and Star-Excursion Balance Test.
  • Recruited 30 male athletes aged 20-35 with acute traumatic lateral ankle sprains.

Main Results:

  • Balance ability was significantly impaired under closed-eye conditions compared to open-eye conditions.
  • No significant difference in weight-bearing symmetry between injured and uninjured limbs.
  • Nondominant limb exhibited significantly higher weight-bearing than the dominant limb.
