Individual health behaviors, not neighborhood factors, significantly influence changes in self-reported health status over time. This study highlights personal health choices as key determinants of evolving health perceptions.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Health Services Research
Background:
- Self-reported health status is a conventional population health measure, validated for morbidity and mortality.
- Limited research exists on the dynamics of self-reported health status change and its determinants.
- This study investigates factors influencing changes in self-reported health over time.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore factors affecting changes in self-reported health status.
- To identify determinants of health status change using individual and neighborhood characteristics.
- To understand the stability of health ratings over time.
Main Methods:
- Utilized two rounds (2001, 2003) of neighborhood health survey data (n=671) from Hamilton, Ontario.
- Employed logistic regression to predict changes in self-reported health status.
- Examined compositional, contextual, and collective characteristics as explanatory variables.
Main Results:
- Approximately one-third of participants reported a change in health status between 2001 and 2003.
- Individual compositional characteristics (e.g., smoking, healthcare use) were primary drivers of health status change.
- Contextual and collective factors, along with age and gender, did not show significant links to health status change.
Conclusions:
- Individual health behaviors are more influential on self-reported health changes than neighborhood characteristics.
- Findings contribute to understanding health rating stability and change determinants.
- Further research with larger samples and longer timeframes is recommended.
