Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Magnetic resonance (MR)-guided microwave coagulation therapy was first performed for liver tumors in 2000.
  • Advancements in instrumentation and software are crucial for treating complex liver tumors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the development and application of new MR-guided systems for liver tumor treatment.
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of these enhanced techniques.

Main Methods:

  • Development of MR-compatible laparoscopic and thoracoscopic instruments for accessing difficult-to-reach liver tumors.
  • Customization of MR gradient-based tracking and real-time MR temperature mapping software.
  • Implementation of navigation and evaluation software ("FootPrint") for improved treatment accuracy and assessment.

Main Results:

  • Successfully treated 184 patients with liver tumors using the new MR-guided microwave coagulation techniques.
  • Achieved accurate and safe treatment delivery for tumors located near the diaphragm or adjacent to other organs.
  • Demonstrated improved treatment evaluation and accuracy through specialized software.

Conclusions:

  • The newly developed MR-guided microwave coagulation systems enhance the accuracy, safety, and ease of liver tumor treatment.
  • These advanced techniques represent a significant improvement in managing liver malignancies.
  • The system has proven safe, with no major complications reported in 184 treated patients.
