    Pain relief during hysterosalpingography (HSG) is limited with most pharmacological interventions. Some analgesia may offer benefits more than 30 minutes after the procedure, warranting further research.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To systematically review and compare the efficacy of various pharmacological interventions for managing pain during hysterosalpingography (HSG).
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of different analgesics in alleviating procedural pain in women undergoing HSG for subfertility.

    • A comprehensive literature search was conducted using MEDLINE and EMBASE databases up to July 2006.
    • Inclusion criteria focused on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating pharmacological pain relief during HSG.

    • Topical analgesia showed greater benefit than paracervical block in one small RCT (20 women).

    Conclusions:

    • Current evidence suggests limited effectiveness of most pharmacological interventions for pain relief during and immediately following HSG.
    • There is some evidence for pain reduction beyond 30 minutes post-procedure.
    • Further research is recommended to explore the role of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and intrauterine anesthetics in HSG pain management.
