Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of transabdominal ultrasonography in measuring pediatric bladder volume and detrusor muscle thickness.
  • To investigate the correlation of these measurements with age, height, and body mass index (BMI) in children.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 244 healthy school-aged children was conducted.
  • Transabdominal ultrasonography was used to measure anterior, posterior, and lateral bladder wall (detrusor) thicknesses.
  • Age, height, and BMI were recorded for all participants.

Main Results:

  • Bladder volume showed a significant positive correlation with age (P = 0.0001).
  • Anterior and posterior detrusor wall thicknesses demonstrated significant positive correlations with both age (P <0.05) and BMI (P = 0.0001 and P = 0.001, respectively).
  • Lateral detrusor wall thickness did not show significant correlations with age or BMI.

Conclusions:

  • Transabdominal ultrasonography is effective for evaluating bladder volume and detrusor muscle thickness in children.
  • Anterior and posterior detrusor wall thickness measurements are significantly influenced by age and BMI in this pediatric cohort.
