Summary

This study evaluated 55 patients with hepatolithiasis, finding that endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is an effective treatment alternative to surgery. While stone clearance varied by classification and stricture location, ERCP demonstrated success in managing intrahepatic stones.

Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver most commonly caused by hepatotropic viruses (A–E), though non-infectious causes such as alcohol and drugs also exist.Hepatitis AHepatitis A virus (HAV) is a non-enveloped RNA virus of the Picornaviridae family. It is primarily transmitted via the fecal-oral route, typically through ingestion of contaminated food or water. After ingestion, HAV enters the bloodstream through the oropharynx or intestinal epithelium and reaches the liver. The...

Temporal trends and regional variations in hepatocellular carcinoma etiology: a multinational study across Asia.

Hepatology international·2026

Area of Science:

  • Hepatobiliary surgery
  • Gastroenterology
  • Endoscopic procedures

Background:

  • Hepatolithiasis, or intrahepatic stones, poses significant clinical challenges.
  • Understanding the etiology and treatment outcomes is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the experience with hepatolithiasis management in 55 patients.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) as a treatment modality.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective evaluation of 55 patients diagnosed with hepatolithiasis between June 1995 and March 2003.
  • Diagnosis confirmed via cholangiography, ultrasonography, and computed tomography.
  • Patients classified using the Tsunoda classification system.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The primary causes identified were prior bilio-digestive surgery (49%) and Caroli disease (14.5%).
  • Most patients (67.3%) had intrahepatic stones only; 32.7% had associated common bile duct or gallbladder stones.
  • Complete stone clearance was achieved in 40% of patients via ERCP, with a mean of 4 procedures required.

Conclusions:

  • The etiological factors for hepatolithiasis in this cohort align with Western populations.
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) presents a viable and effective alternative to surgical intervention for hepatolithiasis.
