Dislocation of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) can occur early or late after surgery. Early TKA dislocation may require revision surgery, while late traumatic dislocation can often be managed with closed reduction.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common procedure for end-stage knee arthritis.
  • Dislocation of a TKA is a rare but serious complication.

Observation:

  • Two cases of TKA dislocation were observed within a week.
  • Case 1: A 71-year-old woman with early dislocation (3 weeks post-op) of a bilateral primary TKA, requiring revision surgery.
  • Case 2: A 72-year-old woman with late traumatic dislocation (10 years post-op) of a primary TKA, managed with closed reduction.

Findings:

  • Early TKA dislocation may indicate component loosening or instability requiring revision.
  • Late traumatic TKA dislocation can be successfully treated non-operatively in select cases.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Highlights the importance of timely diagnosis and appropriate management for TKA dislocations.
  • Suggests different treatment pathways based on the timing and mechanism of dislocation.
  • Informs surgical planning and patient selection for TKA to minimize dislocation risk.
