Background:

  • Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a common condition affecting adults.
  • The apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene, particularly the epsilon 4 allele, has been implicated in various neurological conditions.
  • The role of APOE alleles in nonsyndromic SNHL remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between APOE alleles and nonsyndromic, adult-onset sensorineural hearing loss.
  • To compare APOE allele frequencies in SNHL patients with those in the general population.
  • To explore potential correlations between APOE epsilon 4 allele presence and the severity of hearing loss or word recognition impairment.

Main Methods:

  • Genotyping for APOE alleles was performed on DNA from 89 adult SNHL subjects.
  • APOE allele frequencies in the study cohort were compared to general population data.
  • Subjects were stratified by hearing loss severity and word recognition impairment severity for further analysis.

Main Results:

  • The APOE epsilon 4 allele was found to be under-represented in the study sample of SNHL patients compared to the general population.
  • No significant association was detected between the APOE epsilon 4 allele and the severity of hearing loss.
  • Similarly, no relationship was observed between the APOE epsilon 4 allele and the severity of word recognition impairment.

Conclusions:

  • The APOE epsilon 4 allele appears to be less prevalent in adults with nonsyndromic SNHL.
  • Current findings do not support a direct link between APOE epsilon 4 and SNHL severity.
  • Future research should consider population-based, longitudinal designs or younger cohorts to further elucidate the role of APOE in SNHL.
