Summary

This study surveyed adolescent gambling in Lithuania, finding 4.2% exhibit pathological gambling. Male gender, parental gambling, and substance use were linked to problem gambling behaviors in youth.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the prevalence of pathological gambling among adolescents in Kaunas, Lithuania.
To identify factors associated with pathological gambling in this demographic.

Main Methods:

A survey was conducted among adolescents in Kaunas, Lithuania.
Data was collected using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV-Multiple Response-Adapted for Juveniles and the South Oaks Gambling Screen-Revised for Adolescents.
Statistical analysis was performed to identify significant associations.

Main Results:

82.6% of adolescents reported engaging in gambling activities.
Pathological gambling prevalence was 4.2% (DSM-IV) and 5.2% (SOGS-RA).
Significant associations with pathological gambling included male gender, cognitive distortions, parental gambling, alcohol, and smoking.

Conclusions:

Adolescent gambling, including pathological forms, is prevalent in Kaunas, Lithuania.
Specific demographic and behavioral factors are associated with increased risk.
Early intervention and prevention strategies targeting at-risk adolescents are warranted.
