Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Genetics
  • Medical Psychology

Background:

  • Autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (ADRP) is an inherited retinal disorder.
  • Predictive genetic testing offers insights into disease risk for family members.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the perspectives of individuals affected by ADRP and their families regarding predictive genetic testing.
  • To understand attitudes towards testing presymptomatic children.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective questionnaire-based study was conducted.
  • Participants included 46 adults with ADRP and their family members from confirmed pedigrees.

Main Results:

  • A majority of unaffected siblings (73%) and patients (67%) expressed willingness for prenatal testing.

  • Patients were more inclined than unaffected siblings to support the availability of treatment before predictive testing.
  • Over half (57%) of participants reported psychoemotional distress recalling their childhood predictive testing experiences.
  • Conclusions:

    • ADRP families generally support predictive genetic testing for presymptomatic children.
    • Counseling is crucial to address the psychological and social impact of test outcomes.
