Summary

Combined phacoemulsification, PCIOL insertion, and PPV is a viable surgical option for eyes with vitreoretinal pathology and cataracts. This combined approach achieved high rates of retinal reattachment and visual acuity improvement.

Background:

  • Cataracts frequently coexist with vitreoretinal pathologies, complicating treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of a combined phacoemulsification, posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL) implantation, and pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) procedure.
  • To assess anatomical success (retinal reattachment), functional success (visual acuity), and complications in eyes with vitreoretinal pathology and cataract.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 65 eyes from 64 patients undergoing the combined procedure between 2000 and 2004.
  • Data collected included indications, intraoperative/postoperative complications, retinal reattachment rates, and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA).

Main Results:

  • The most common indication was vitreous hemorrhage with or without retinal detachment (29.2%).
  • Primary anatomical success was achieved in 90.7% of eyes.
  • Visual acuity improved in 73.8% of cases; postoperative inflammation was higher in previously vitrectomized eyes.

  • Combined phacoemulsification, PCIOL implantation, and PPV is a feasible and effective surgical option for managing complex cases.
  • The procedure offers good anatomical and functional outcomes for patients with coexisting vitreoretinal disease and cataract.
