Language Development

Children master language quickly and with relative ease, supported by both biological predisposition and reinforcement. B. F. Skinner (1957) proposed that language is learned through reinforcement, while Noam Chomsky (1965) argued that language acquisition mechanisms are biologically determined.
The critical period for language acquisition suggests that the ability to acquire language is at its peak early in life. As people age, this proficiency decreases. Language development begins very...

Language and Cognition

Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

Summary

Early language assessments for internationally adopted toddlers can predict later development. Identifying delays in prelinguistic skills and vocabulary comprehension helps determine which children may need early intervention for slow language development.

Area of Science:

  • Child Language Acquisition
  • Developmental Pediatrics
  • International Adoption

Background:

  • Assessing language and speech in newly adopted children presents unique challenges.
  • Early intervention is crucial for children experiencing developmental delays.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if initial assessments of internationally adopted toddlers predict language outcomes at age 2.
  • To develop and assess early intervention guidelines using local norms.

Main Methods:

  • Followed 27 internationally adopted toddlers (11-23 months) for one year post-adoption.
  • Utilized the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales-Developmental Profile (CSBS-DP) and MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory-Words and Gestures (MCDI-WG) for initial assessments.
  • Compared initial scores with speech and language outcomes at age 2.

Main Results:

  • Receptive language and articulation developed well by age 2; expressive language was emerging.
  • CSBS-DP Behavior Sample and MCDI-WG Words Understood Developmental Quotient scores predicted age 2 language outcomes.
  • Early intervention guidelines demonstrated strong predictive accuracy (LR+ = 21.00; LR- = .00).
  • 22% of children exhibited slow language development compared to peers.

Conclusions:

  • Delays in prelinguistic skills and vocabulary comprehension at initial assessment indicate a high likelihood of slow language development at age 2.
  • Initial assessments are vital for informing early intervention decisions in this population.
