Background:

Adverse parental child-rearing styles are linked to adolescent suicidality.
Long-term effects of parental bonding on adult suicidality remain under-researched.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between parental bonding and lifetime suicidality in adulthood.
To examine the long-term impact of early life experiences on adult mental health outcomes.

Main Methods:

Utilized data from 7740 respondents in the European Study of Epidemiology of Mental Disorders project.
Assessed suicidality (ideation, attempt) and parental bonding (care, overprotection, authoritarianism) using validated instruments.
Employed multinomial-logistic regression, adjusting for mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and alcohol use disorders.

Main Results:

Found significant associations between low maternal and paternal care and increased suicidality in adulthood.
Country-specific differences in these associations were found to be negligible.

Conclusions:

Fostering a more caring parenting environment through prevention programs can be a protective factor against adult suicidality.
Further research is needed to elucidate the pathways linking child-rearing behaviors to adult suicidal outcomes.
