Summary

Stripping teeth without coolant generates significant heat, with tungsten carbide burs on incisors causing the most dangerous temperature rise. Cooling is essential during dental stripping procedures to prevent pulp damage.

  • Pulp temperature was monitored using a thermocouple in the pulp chamber.
  • Main Results:

    • A significant interaction was found between stripping method and tooth type (P = .000).
    • Tungsten carbide burs on mandibular incisors produced the highest temperature increase (5.63 ± 1.73°C), exceeding the critical 5.5°C threshold.
    • Six of nine groups showed temperature increases above the critical level.

    Conclusions:

    • Frictional heat generation is a significant concern during dental stripping.
    • Cooling is crucial, especially when using high-speed handpieces on mandibular incisors, to prevent pulpal damage.
