Summary

Early post-hemicolectomy colonoscopy is safe in dogs, with no observed complications. This study demonstrates that colonoscopy can be safely performed in the early period following a left hemicolectomy with primary anastomosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and feasibility of performing colonoscopy in the early post-operative period after a left hemicolectomy with primary anastomosis in dogs.
  • To assess intraluminal pressures during early post-colectomy colonoscopy.

  • Colonoscopy was performed preoperatively and at 1, 2, 3, and 7 days after left hemicolectomy with primary anastomosis in 11 dogs.

    • The colon and anastomosis were adequately visualized in all dogs post-surgery.

    • No air leakage or intra-abdominal abscesses were detected.
    • Pressures in post-colectomy dogs were comparable to, or slightly lower than, those in dogs undergoing colonoscopy for other indications (averaging 30 mmHg).

    Conclusions:

    • Colonoscopy can be safely performed during the early post-colectomy period in dogs.
    • The procedure allows for adequate visualization of the colon and anastomosis.
    • Early post-operative colonoscopy does not appear to increase the risk of complications such as leakage or abscess formation.
