Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a new, low-cost simulator for laparoscopic surgical training.
  • To assess its effectiveness in improving eye-hand coordination and spatial orientation.

Main Methods:

  • A simulator was designed using a box, internal light, and a video camera connected to a TV.
  • Experienced surgeons evaluated its quality, illumination, and adequacy.
  • 12 general surgeons and 18 trainees performed seven drills after basic skills training, with task completion times recorded before and after 10 practice sessions.

Main Results:

  • Experienced surgeons rated the simulator highly (mean 42/44).
  • All participants showed significant improvement, with task completion times decreasing by an average of 31.8% (p<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • The developed simulator is an effective, economical tool for acquiring laparoscopic surgical skills.
  • It offers a practical alternative to expensive equipment and overcomes realism limitations.
