Summary

Hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus larvae, rarely affects kidneys. Surgical nephrectomy is preferred over cyst puncture due to anaphylaxis risk, as demonstrated in 10 renal hydatid disease cases.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Parasitology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, commonly affects the liver and lungs.
  • Renal involvement is rare and often asymptomatic, presenting diagnostic challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report on the clinical presentation and management of renal hydatid disease.
  • To emphasize the risks associated with cyst aspiration and the benefits of surgical intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 10 patients with renal hydatid disease treated surgically.
  • Analysis of clinical data, diagnostic findings, and treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Renal hydatid disease cases were treated with partial or total nephrectomy.
  • No cases of anaphylaxis were reported post-operatively, supporting surgical management.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical nephrectomy remains the gold standard for treating renal hydatid disease.
  • Avoiding cyst puncture is crucial to prevent potentially fatal anaphylactic reactions.
