Background:

Falls are a significant issue in hospitals and nursing homes, necessitating effective patient risk assessment.
Current fall risk scales often overlap with general nursing assessments, creating redundancy.
A unified instrument for general assessment and fall risk screening would improve efficiency.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the Care Dependency Scale (CDS) for identifying fall risk.
To determine if the CDS can serve as a tool for fall risk screening in hospital and nursing home settings.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional study involving 9943 German hospital patients and nursing home residents in 2004.
Standardized questionnaires were administered, with a response rate of 77.1%.
Sensitivity, specificity, odds ratios, and logistic regression analysis were used to assess the CDS for fall risk.

Main Results:

Hospitalized patients who fell exhibited higher care dependency than those who did not.
The Care Dependency Scale demonstrated capability in differentiating between patients who fell and those who did not.
The 'Avoidance of danger' item on the CDS was identified as a significant indicator of fall risk.

Conclusions:

The Care Dependency Scale can simplify nursing assessments by serving as a fall risk screening tool in hospitals.
Additional investigation is required to validate the Care Dependency Scale's effectiveness for fall risk screening in nursing home populations.
