Insights
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Early diagnosis and managing CVD risk factors are crucial for better outcomes in CKD patients.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Cardiology
- Public Health
Background:
- Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a primary cause of death and illness in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients.
- CKD patients, even in early stages, face significant CVD risks.
- Addressing CVD in CKD requires understanding both traditional and renal-specific risk factors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To emphasize the critical link between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
- To highlight the importance of early CKD diagnosis and comprehensive risk factor management.
- To advocate for integrated care strategies to mitigate CVD in CKD populations.
Main Methods:
- Review of existing literature on CVD in CKD.
- Analysis of traditional and non-traditional CVD risk factors in CKD patients.
- Application of the ANNA Nephrology Nursing Standards of Practice and Guidelines for Care.
Main Results:
- CVD significantly increases morbidity and mortality in individuals with CKD.
- Early identification of CKD and proactive management of associated CVD risks are essential.
- A multifactorial approach targeting both traditional and renal-related CVD risk factors is necessary.
Conclusions:
- Integrated care focusing on CVD risk reduction is vital for CKD patients.
- Nephrology nursing standards provide a framework for managing CVD risk in CKD.
- Improving outcomes for CKD patients necessitates a dual focus on kidney function and cardiovascular health.
Abstract:
This is the third in a series of three articles examining cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the patient with chronic kidney disease (CKD). CVD is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with CKD, including those in the early stages. Early diagnosis of CKD and recognition of both traditional and nontraditional renal-related CVD risk factors are vital in improving outcomes for this population. Care of the patient with CKD should center on reduction of both types of risk factors for CVD. The ANNA Nephrology Nursing Standards of Practice and Guidelines for Care provide the basis for planning and providing care for patients with CKD and for reducing the risk of CVD in this patient population.
