Summary

This case study highlights anuric renal failure following bilateral ureteroscopy for kidney stones. Ureteral stenting on at least one side is recommended to prevent this rare complication.

Background:

  • Flexible ureteroscopy is a common procedure for treating kidney stones (renal calculi).
  • Same-session bilateral ureteroscopy involves treating both kidneys in a single operative session.

Observation:

  • A rare case of anuric renal failure (complete urine production cessation) was observed.
  • This complication occurred after atraumatic, same-session bilateral flexible ureteroscopy.

Findings:

  • The study reports the first known instance of anuric renal failure post-procedure.
  • There is currently no established guideline on ureteral stenting for bilateral ureteroscopy due to limited evidence.

Implications:

  • Ureteral stenting, at least unilaterally, should be strongly considered to mitigate the risk of renal failure.
  • Further prospective randomized studies are needed to establish optimal stenting protocols for bilateral ureteroscopy.
