CD36 expression is a valuable marker for diagnosing acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and differentiating it from other leukemia types. Its presence, particularly in monocyte lineage involved leukemia (MLIL), aids in accurate classification.
Area of Science:
- Hematology
- Immunophenotyping
- Leukemia Diagnostics
Background:
- Leukemia diagnosis relies on accurate immunophenotyping.
- CD36 is a cell surface glycoprotein with potential diagnostic utility in hematological malignancies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate CD36 expression in leukemia cells.
- To determine the significance of CD36 in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of leukemia.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of 133 leukemia blood samples using CD45/SSC and multi-color flow cytometry.
- Determination of CD36 and other leukocyte differentiation antigens.
Main Results:
- CD36 was positive in 21.8% of leukemia cases, significantly higher in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) subtypes M(4), M(5), and M(6) compared to M(1), M(2), and M(3).
- In monocyte lineage involved leukemia (MLIL), CD36 positive rate (92.6%) was significantly higher than CD14 (48.1%).
- CD36 expression showed significant negative regression with CD117 and positive regression with CD14 in specific AML subtypes.
Conclusions:
- Combining CD36 with lymphoid and myeloid antigens aids in diagnosing and differentiating lymphoid, myeloid, and MLIL.
- CD36 is a more sensitive marker than CD14 for MLIL.
- CD36 expression patterns provide crucial information for leukemia subtyping and differential diagnosis.
