Background:

Heavy menstrual bleeding affects many women.
Endometrial ablation is a treatment option for heavy bleeding.
The Novasure system is a second-generation endometrial ablation device.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Novasure endometrial ablation system.
To report on amenorrhea rates and hysterectomy rates following Novasure treatment.

Main Methods:

The Novasure system utilizes a bipolar radiofrequency device with a self-terminating procedure.
Procedure is based on tissue impedance or time, with a cavity assessment system for perforation detection.
No pretreatment is required for the Novasure procedure.

Main Results:

Randomized controlled trials show 1-year amenorrhea rates of 44-56%.
Prospective observational studies report up to 5-year amenorrhea rates of 58-75%.
Hysterectomy rates in prospective trials were low, at 4%.

Conclusions:

The Novasure endometrial ablation system is an effective second-generation ablation technique.
It achieves high rates of amenorrhea in women with heavy menstrual bleeding.
The system demonstrates a favorable safety profile with low hysterectomy rates.
