Summary

A chipmunk developed a rare giant cell-type osteosarcoma, a bone cancer, on its tail root. This case marks the first reported instance of osteosarcoma in this rodent species.

Background:

  • Osteosarcoma is a primary bone malignancy typically affecting long bones in dogs and humans.
  • Spontaneous tumors in small exotic mammals are infrequently reported, limiting comparative oncology data.

Observation:

  • An 8-year-old chipmunk (Tamias sibiricus) presented with a tail root mass.
  • Histopathological examination revealed a proliferation of spindle-to-polyhedral cells and multinucleated giant cells with neoplastic osteoid production.

Findings:

  • Immunohistochemistry showed neoplastic cells positive for vimentin and weakly positive for osteocalcin.
  • The osteoid matrix was also positive for osteocalcin.
  • The tumor was diagnosed as a giant cell-type osteosarcoma.
