Summary

General practitioner (GP) workforce participation in Tasmania is influenced by age and gender, not rurality. Understanding these demographic factors is key for accurate GP workforce predictions.

Area of Science:

  • Medical workforce research
  • Health services research
  • Rural health

Background:

  • Accurate prediction of future general practitioner (GP) workforce requires understanding demographic influences on participation.
  • National studies may not capture regional variations in GP workforce dynamics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify GP characteristics associated with workforce participation specifically within Tasmania.
  • To inform regional workforce planning by examining local demographic impacts.

Main Methods:

  • A self-administered census of Tasmanian GPs was conducted in 2005.
  • Data collected included GP demographics and work hours (3.5-hour sessions per week).

Main Results:

  • A 76% response rate was achieved with 403 GPs participating.
  • GP workforce participation was associated with age, gender, and place of graduation (non-Australia/UK/Ireland).
  • Rurality did not significantly affect participation; however, older women (over 55) were more likely to work full-time.

Conclusions:

  • Demographic factors influencing GP workforce participation can differ regionally.
  • National workforce prediction models may need contextualization for local Tasmanian circumstances.
