Summary

Bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty offers a stable, less invasive option for proximal femoral fractures. It shows a lower risk of acetabular protrusion compared to classical hemiarthroplasty.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Biomaterials
  • Prosthetic joint replacement

Background:

  • Bipolar hip prosthesis (BHP) features a steel outer shell and polyethylene liner with an inner steel head.
  • BHPs are used for proximal femur fractures, preserving acetabular integrity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate indications for bipolar hip prostheses (BHP).
  • Assess the advantages of BHP compared to other hip arthroplasty methods.

Main Methods:

  • Surgical technique and indications analyzed in 79 patients (ages 70-80).
  • Focus on patients with femoral neck fractures or proximal femur injuries.
  • Follow-up evaluation of 54 patients over 3-9 years.

Main Results:

  • Four dislocations occurred (two due to stem malalignment), requiring revision.
  • No protrusion into the acetabulum or stem failure observed.
  • Nearly all patients reported pain-free outcomes; Harris hip scores affected by comorbidities.

Conclusions:

  • Bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty is suitable for acute proximal femoral fractures.
  • Offers reduced patient stress compared to total hip arthroplasty.
  • Provides greater stability and lower protrusion risk than classical hemiarthroplasty.
