New insights on prolactin function

A new rat model for the study of hyperprolactinemia has been developed by subcutaneous injection of a prolactin-secreting pituitary tumor cell line. Hyperprolactinemia caused excess urinary calcium. Bone loss in this animal model may be associated with suppressed calcium levels or an effect of prolactin on renal calcium reabsorption.
