Summary

Pain assessments using the visual analogue scale (VAS) and McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) correlated well in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) but poorly in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This suggests differences in how organic versus functional pain is perceived and reported.
