Summary

Plain radiographs of optic foramina offer little diagnostic value for ophthalmic disorders. Routine use should be abandoned to reduce radiation exposure and healthcare costs.

  • A retrospective review of 318 plain radiograph examinations of the optic foramina from 1984 to 1999.
  • Analysis of radiographic findings in relation to patient ophthalmic conditions.

Main Results:

  • Nearly all (317/318) radiographs showed no abnormalities.
  • The single exception revealed asymmetry within normal limits, offering no significant diagnostic information.

Conclusions:

  • Plain radiography of the optic foramina has minimal to no diagnostic function for ophthalmic disorders.
  • Discontinuing routine use can decrease radiation exposure and save costs.
