Background:

Teaching research to undergraduates presents challenges, particularly in providing practical experience.
Nursing curricula increasingly require students to analyze, interpret, and utilize research findings.
The Bachelor of Technology in Nursing Science program at Tshwane University of Technology mandates research protocol development and utilization of findings.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore an integrated approach to teaching research to undergraduate nursing students.
To enhance research skills by linking experiential learning opportunities with research projects.
To make research theory more tangible and applicable for nursing students.

Main Methods:

An integrated strategy was employed, merging nursing experiential learning with research activities.
Second-year nursing students participated in a school nursing experiential learning project.
A school health survey was conducted in a primary school in Tshwane as part of the project.

Main Results:

The school health survey yielded specific results regarding the health status of primary school children.
Students developed a health education intervention directly based on the research findings.
The integrated approach successfully brought research theory to life for the students.

Conclusions:

Integrating research into experiential learning is an effective strategy for nursing education.
This uncomplicated and transferable approach enhances student engagement with research.
The methodology can be adapted to other disciplines for similar educational benefits.
