The eye is a spherical, hollow structure composed of three tissue layers. The outer layer — the fibrous tunic, comprises the sclera — a white structure — and the cornea, which is transparent. Background:

  • Acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMNR) is a rare idiopathic posterior uveitis.
  • The condition presents with sudden visual disturbances, often following a flu-like illness.

Observation:

  • A 22-year-old woman experienced sudden central scotomas in both eyes after a flu-like illness.
  • Clinical examination showed characteristic reddish-brown macular lesions in the parafoveal regions.
  • Visual field testing confirmed central scotomas correlating with retinal lesions.

Findings:

  • The case illustrates a typical presentation of acute macular neuroretinopathy.
  • The observed retinal injuries and visual field defects were consistent with AMNR.

Implications:

  • AMNR is a rare but significant cause of vision impairment.
  • Currently, no effective treatments are available for acute macular neuroretinopathy.
  • Further research into pathogenic theories is needed to develop potential therapies.
