Amebiasis

Entamoeba histolytica, a protozoan parasite, is responsible for intestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis. Though a significant proportion of infections remain asymptomatic, approximately 50 million individuals annually are estimated to present with clinical disease, resulting in up to 100,000 deaths globally. The disease burden is disproportionately high in regions with lower socioeconomic status, such as parts of India, Africa, Mexico, and Latin America.Etiology and TransmissionThe infective...

Area of Science:

  • Medicine
  • Parasitology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Atraumatic spleen rupture can present with diverse underlying causes.
  • Echinococcus multilocularis infection, a parasitic zoonosis, typically affects the liver but can involve other organs.

Observation:

  • An 81-year-old patient underwent surgery for a presumed atraumatic spleen rupture.
  • Intraoperatively, a spleen abscess was identified.
  • Histopathological analysis confirmed Echinococcus multilocularis infection within the spleen.

Findings:

  • The spleen abscess was attributed to Echinococcus multilocularis.
  • Remarkably, there was no evidence of liver involvement or other organ dissemination.
  • The patient's case history, clinical course, and treatment are detailed.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for Echinococcus multilocularis to cause splenic abscesses without hepatic involvement.
  • It underscores the importance of considering parasitic infections in the differential diagnosis of splenic pathologies.
  • Further understanding of Echinococcus multilocularis syndrome presentation is crucial for timely diagnosis and management.
