Cardiac Catheterization III: Left Heart Catheterization

Left heart catheterization is an invasive diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the function and structure of the left side of the heart. It is generally performed to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions such as valve abnormalities, coronary artery disease, and congenital heart defects.Diagnostic and therapeutic purposesLeft heart catheterization serves various diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Assessing coronary artery bypass grafts.Evaluating coronary artery disease in...

Electrocardiogram Fundamentals

Introduction
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a diagnostic tool for identifying cardiac conditions such as arrhythmias, conduction abnormalities, and myocardial ischemia.
Definition
An electrocardiogram (ECG) visualizes the heart's electrical activity by tracing the electrical movement associated with each heartbeat on a graph or monitor. As the heart beats, an electrical wave passes through it, correlating with the cardiac cycle events.
Parts of an ECG
An ECG utilizes electrodes on the skin to...

Summary

Left ventricular lead dislodgement complicates cardiac resynchronization therapy. A novel technique using an inactive lead in the same vein successfully stabilized a dislodging lead, avoiding repeat surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Medical Devices
  • Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Left ventricular (LV) lead dislodgement is a frequent complication in cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).
  • Lead dislodgement necessitates re-operation, increasing patient risk and healthcare costs.

Observation:

  • A case report details a patient experiencing recurrent LV lead dislodgement during CRT.
  • The dislodging lead was positioned within a cardiac vein.

Findings:

  • A novel technique was employed to stabilize the dislodging LV lead.
  • An inactive LV lead was impacted into the same cardiac vein to secure the dislodging lead.

Implications:

  • This technique offers a potential solution to prevent LV lead dislodgement in CRT.
  • It may reduce the need for re-operations, improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare burdens.
