Summary

Mating disruption effectively controls grape moths, reducing pesticide needs. Using pheromones for both European vine moth (Lobesia botrana) and honeydew moth (Cryptoblabes gnidiella) eliminated insecticide use in wine grapes.

  • Quantification of insecticide applications required for each treatment plot.

    • A significant reduction in moth-infested clusters was observed in pheromone-treated plots compared to control plots.
    • No significant difference in infestation reduction was found between plots treated with one pheromone versus plots treated with both.
    • Insecticide applications were highest in control plots, lower in L. botrana-only treated plots, and zero in plots treated with pheromones for both pests.

    Conclusions:

    • Mating disruption is effective in controlling both European vine moth and honeydew moth in vineyards.
    • Targeting both pests with mating disruption pheromones can eliminate the need for insecticide applications.
    • This integrated pest management approach offers a sustainable solution for grape growers.
