[In case of risks and side effects: ask your genes, too]

Abstract:
The medical literature reports between 5 and 17% of all hospitalisations to be due to side effects or interactions of drugs. These effects may be caused by genetic or non-genetic factors. The influence of genes on the pharmacology of drugs has been studied intensively during the last years. However, only one diagnostic test for two of these genes is currently commercially available.
Insights
Adverse drug reactions cause 5-17% of hospitalizations, influenced by genetics. Despite intensive research into pharmacogenetics, few diagnostic tests are available for these genetic factors.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacogenetics
- Clinical Pharmacology
- Drug Interactions
Context:
- 5-17% of hospitalizations stem from adverse drug reactions or interactions.
- Both genetic and non-genetic factors contribute to these drug-related issues.
- Genetic influences on drug response are a significant area of research.
Purpose:
- To highlight the prevalence of adverse drug events.
- To underscore the role of genetic factors in drug response.
- To point out the limited availability of genetic diagnostic tests.
Summary:
- Adverse drug reactions and interactions are a substantial cause of hospitalizations, accounting for 5-17% of admissions.
- Genetic variations play a crucial role in how individuals respond to medications, influencing drug efficacy and toxicity.
- Despite extensive research in pharmacogenetics, the clinical application of genetic testing for drug response remains limited, with only one commercial test available for two genes.
Impact:
- Increases awareness of the clinical significance of adverse drug events.
- Emphasizes the need for further development and accessibility of pharmacogenetic testing.
- Could inform clinical practice and personalized medicine approaches to drug therapy.
