Summary

Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) can lead to significant periodontal attachment loss. This study found greater probing attachment loss at ANUG-affected sites compared to other areas, highlighting a serious sequela of the condition.

Background:

  • Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) is often classified solely as gingivitis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify probing attachment loss following the acute phase of ANUG.
  • To compare attachment loss in ANUG-affected sites versus unaffected sites.

  • Studied 13 patients diagnosed with ANUG.
  • Identified previously affected sites by interdental soft tissue cratering.
  • Compared probing attachment levels between ANUG sites and other sites using a paired Student t-test.

  • Mean probing attachment level at ANUG sites was 2.2 +/- 0.9 mm.
