Histology of the Uterus

The uterine wall consists of three histological layers: the perimetrium, myometrium, and endometrium. The outermost perimetrium is a thin, serous membrane connected with the broad ligament on the sides, which helps anchor the uterus in the pelvic cavity. The thickest layer, myometrium, is mainly made up of smooth muscle tissue bundles.   • A 26-year-old female presented with a uterine mass discovered during cesarean section.
  • Histological, immunohistochemical, and chromosomal analyses confirmed a PNET diagnosis.

Findings:

  • The patient received radical surgery, adjuvant chemotherapy (vincristine, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, ifosfamide, etoposide), and pelvic radiation.
  • This represents one of only 14 reported cases of uterine PNETs in the English literature.

Implications:

  • The rarity of uterine PNETs limits definitive conclusions on optimal therapeutic management and prognosis.
  • Further case reports and studies are needed to establish treatment guidelines and understand long-term outcomes for this rare cancer.
