Background:

Prospective adoption studies are crucial for disentangling genetic and environmental influences on child development.
Understanding gene-environment interplay is key to identifying effective interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate how family processes mediate or moderate genetic influences on child development.
To identify malleable family processes for targeted interventions.
To examine the expression of genetic influences in adopted children.

Main Methods:

Prospective adoption study design with 359 triads (birth parents, adoptive parents, adopted children).
Data collection at 6-month intervals until child age 3.
Assessment of infant temperament, social behavior, health, parent characteristics, parenting, and prenatal exposures.

Main Results:

Preliminary analyses indicate a representative sample with minimal confounding from adoption trends like openness and selective placement.
Early data collection is underway, with future analyses planned.

Conclusions:

The Early Growth and Development Study provides a robust dataset for examining gene-environment interactions in child development.
Findings will inform the development of targeted interventions to support adopted children's well-being.
