Significance of Displacement Current01:28

Significance of Displacement Current

A displacement current is analogous to a real current in Ampère's law, participating in Ampère's law the same way as the usual conduction current. However, it is produced by a changing electric field. Displacement current is defined in terms of a time-varying electric field, and also has an associated displacement current density. By adding a term accounting for displacement current, Maxwell modified the existing Ampère's law, which is now called generalized Ampère's law.

Displacement Current

Ampère's law, in its usual form, does not work in places where the current changes with time and is not steady. Thus, Maxwell suggested including an additional contribution, called the displacement current, Id, to the real conduction current I.
Internal and External Forces01:12

Internal and External Forces

Newton's first law states that a net external force causes a change in motion. External forces act on an object or system, originating outside of the object or system. In contrast, internal forces originate inside the system of interest and do not lead to any acceleration. In simpler words, internal forces are forces that act on one part of an object and are exerted by another part of the same object. External forces are forces that act on an object due to some other object. Therefore, when...
In- and Out-Groups01:31

In- and Out-Groups

People all belong to a gender, race, age, and social economic group. These groups provide a powerful source of our identity and self-esteem (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) and serve as our in-groups. An in-group is a group that we identify with or see ourselves as belonging to.
Frustration and Conflict: Avoidance-Avoidance, Double-Approach Avoidance01:14

Frustration and Conflict: Avoidance-Avoidance, Double-Approach Avoidance

Avoidance-avoidance conflict refers to a psychological situation where a person must choose between two or more unpleasant alternatives. These conflicts are particularly stressful because neither option is desirable. This dilemma is often expressed in sayings like "caught between a rock and a hard place" or "between the devil and the deep blue sea." For instance, individuals who fear dental procedures may find themselves torn between enduring a painful toothache or facing the anxiety of...

Frustration and Conflict: Approach-Approach, Approach-Avoidance

Frustration occurs when people are obstructed or prevented from achieving a desired goal or fulfilling a perceived need. For example, when someone's input is ignored in a discussion, it can lead to feelings of frustration. Conflict, however, arises from opposing interests, goals, or actions. Conflicts can take various forms based on the nature of these opposing desires or goals.
One common type of conflict is the Approach–Approach Conflict. In this case, a person faces two desirable options,...

Summary

Nepal

Area of Science:

  • Humanitarian Crises
  • Conflict-Induced Displacement
  • Public Health in Developing Nations

Background:

  • Nepal faces a severe humanitarian crisis due to a decade-long Maoist conflict.
  • Over 200,000 people are internally displaced, primarily in western districts.
  • Displacement exacerbates physical and mental health issues, disproportionately affecting women and children.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the critical situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nepal.
  • To examine the inadequate governmental and non-governmental responses to the IDP crisis.
  • To propose necessary steps for effective IDP assistance and support.

Main Methods:

  • Qualitative analysis of the conflict's impact on internal displacement.
  • Assessment of governmental and NGO service provision to IDPs.

  • Review of health and nutritional consequences for displaced populations.
  • Main Results:

    • Internal displacement has overwhelmed urban capacities, leading to adverse health outcomes.
    • Government policies have been discriminatory, failing to meet obligations to IDPs.
    • NGOs and international agencies offer insufficient support to displaced individuals.

    Conclusions:

    • Addressing Nepal's IDP crisis requires a collaborative approach between government and development agencies.
    • Essential steps include acknowledging the problem, registration, needs assessment, and health surveys.
    • Development of both short-term emergency relief and long-term assistance programs is crucial for IDP welfare.
