Summary

Double-row arthroscopic rotator cuff repair significantly improves pain and function. This technique achieves excellent outcomes, with most repairs remaining intact and improving strength and range of motion.

Background:

Rotator cuff tear treatment has advanced to arthroscopic techniques.
Double-row fixation is a modern approach for rotator cuff repair.

Purpose of the Study:

To review outcomes of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair using double-row fixation.
To evaluate the effectiveness of this technique in restoring shoulder function and integrity.

Main Methods:

264 patients underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with double-row fixation (1998-2002).
Follow-up included clinical examination and ultrasonography to assess repair integrity.
Constant and visual analogue pain scores were used for evaluation.

Main Results:

Significant improvement in pain scores (7.4 to 0.7) and Constant scores (average increase of 25.4).

Excellent or good subjective outcomes in 90.9% of shoulders.

83% of rotator cuff repairs were intact on postoperative ultrasonography, with higher integrity rates for smaller tears.

Conclusions:

Arthroscopic double-row rotator cuff repair yields high rates of excellent subjective and objective results.
The technique demonstrates good repair integrity, particularly for medium and small tears.
Intact repairs correlate with significantly better strength and range of motion compared to failed repairs.
