Serum ferritin and obstructive coronary artery disease: angiographic correlation

Serum ferritin levels may indicate obstructive coronary artery disease severity in women. Higher ferritin levels (>80 ng/mL) were associated with more severe disease in women, but not in men.

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between serum ferritin levels and the severity of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD).
Main Methods:
- Coronary arteriography and serum ferritin levels were assessed in 115 patients.
- Cut-off values for serum ferritin were set at 80 ng/ml for women and 120 ng/ml for men.
Main Results:
- While mean ferritin levels differed between sexes, no overall correlation was found between ferritin levels and CAD severity.
- However, women with serum ferritin > 80 ng/mL showed significantly higher odds of moderate to severe obstructive CAD (OR 9.71).
- No significant association was observed for men using their respective cut-off values.
Conclusions:
- Serum ferritin levels > 80 ng/mL are associated with more severe obstructive coronary artery disease in women.
- Serum ferritin is not a predictive element for obstructive coronary artery disease severity in men.
