Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Natural Products Chemistry
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Peperomia duclouxii is a plant species with potential medicinal properties.
  • Natural products often serve as a source of novel bioactive compounds.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize new chemical constituents from Peperomia duclouxii.
  • To evaluate the biological activities of the isolated compounds.

Main Methods:

  • Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
  • Structure elucidation through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis (NMR, MS).
  • In vitro assays to assess cell growth inhibition, calcein accumulation, and ICAM-1 induction.

Main Results:

  • Four new compounds (1-4) were identified and characterized.
  • Known compounds, surinone A and oleiferinone, demonstrated cell growth inhibitory activity (IC50: 4.4–9.6 μg/mL) against WI-38, VA-13, and HepG2 cell lines.
  • Sinugibberodiol showed enhanced calcein accumulation compared to verapamil.
  • Compounds 3, 4, surinone A, and oleiferinone exhibited moderate to weak inhibition of ICAM-1 induction.

Conclusions:

  • The study successfully identified novel compounds from Peperomia duclouxii.
  • Several isolated compounds possess notable biological activities, including cytotoxicity and modulation of cellular processes.
  • These findings contribute to understanding the phytochemical profile and potential therapeutic applications of Peperomia duclouxii.
