Summary

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a common congenital heart condition found in 2.5% of athletes. Echocardiography screening is recommended for young athletes to detect BAV early, as it often remains asymptomatic.

Background:

  • Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a prevalent congenital cardiac condition.

  • BAV often presents asymptomatically until complications like stenosis or regurgitation arise.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of BAV in competitive athletes.
  • To assess aortic root dimensions and valvular function in athletes with BAV.
  • To determine the utility of echocardiography in early BAV detection in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Transthoracic echocardiography was performed on 2273 competitive athletes (aged 8-60).
  • Evaluated parameters included aortic root dimensions and aortic valve flow using Doppler.
  • Athletes underwent clinical assessment to exclude other cardiac conditions.

Main Results:

  • BAV was diagnosed in 58 athletes (2.5% prevalence).
